ABERDEEN, S.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team fell in its first conference doubleheader of the season on Tuesday, losing 8-1 and 3-2 to Northern State in Aberdeen, S.D.
MSUM fell to 5-14 overall and 0-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while Northern State improved to 17-9 overall and 2-0 in the league.
In the opener, MSUM had five hits. Freshman outfielder
Madison Paige was 2-for-3 with a double, while senior outfielder
Carly Williamson, sophomore catcher
Savanah Tweet and senior second baseman
Jill Fox each had hits. Tweet scored a run.
Freshman
Tori White took the loss, going 5.2 innings and allowing eight runs, six earned. She struck out three and walked none. Freshman
Jordan Hall pitched a scoreless 1/3 of an inning of relief.
Northern State led 4-0 before MSUM got on the board. Tweet singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Fox. One out later, Williamson singled up the middle, and Tweet would score on an error in center.
In the second game, Williamson was 1-for-3 with a double and RBI. Paige had a double, while sophomore shortstop
Taylor Roddie had an RBI. Tweet was 1-for-3 with a run scored while freshman third baseman
Emma Dummer had a hit. Senior
Hannah Klug scored a run while senior first baseman
Lauren Meeker had a hit.
Freshman pitcher
Becky Volkert pitched five innings and picked up a no-decision. She allowed seven hits and two earned runs, striking out three. Hall took the loss, allowing an unearned run in an inning of work.
MSUM trailed 1-0 in the fourth before scoring two runs in the fifth to take a 2-1 lead. Tweet singled and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Fox. One out later, Klug walked. Williamson doubled to left to score Tweet. Roddie reached on an error to score Klug to put MSUM up 2-1.
Northern tied the game at 2-2 in the fifth. The Wolves scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh to take the 3-2 win.
"It's heartbreaking losing in the bottom of the seventh inning," MSUM head coach
Kelsey Fehl said. "We have to find a way to string some hits together to manufacture runs earlier in the game."
MSUM is back in action on Saturday with an NSIC doubleheader at Bemidji State. The twinbill begins at 1 p.m. in Bemidji, Minn.
