CLERMONT, Fla. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team pounded out 29 hits in splitting a pair of games on Tuesday. The Dragons beat Northwood, 13-4 in six innings before falling to Felician, 8-5.
MSUM is now 4-9 on the nonconference season.
The Dragons avenged an earlier loss to Northwood with the nine-run victory, thanks to a 13-hit attack.
Sophomore shortstop
Taylor Roddie had a huge day at the plate, going 6-for-8 in the two games. Against Northwood, she was 4-for-4 with two homers and a career-high six RBI. Williamson was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBI while sophomore catcher
Savanah Tweet was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Senior first baseman
Lauren Meeker was 2-for-4 as well while freshman designated hitter
Jordan Hall was 1-for-2 with two RBI. Senior outfielder
Hannah Klug was 1-for-3 with two RBI and a walk while sophomore
Aunica Novacek was 1-for-3. MSUM finished with 13 hits in the game.
White picked up the win for MSUM, going six innings. She struck out one and walked two and allowed four earned runs.
"It was great to see us bounce back from an earlier loss against them," MSUM head coach
Kelsey Fehl said. "We came out very strong offensively and Tori threw a great game."
Roddie hit a two-run homer in the first to score Williamson, who had doubled, to give MSUM a 2-0 lead. An inning later, Roddie added a two-run single to make it 4-0.
Northwood cut the lead to 4-2, but the Dragons broke the game open with a five-run third. With one out, Meeker singled and was pinch-ran for by Kelenic. Freshman
Emma Dummer walked, and one out later, Novacek walked to load the bases. Hall was walked to force in a run, making it 5-2. Klug ripped a two-run single up the middle to score Novacek and Tweet to make it 7-2. Moments later, Williamson hit a two-run single to push the lead to 9-2.
While that margin was more than enough for White on the mound, MSUM added more to the lead in the fifth and sixth. Roddie hit a two-run homer in the fifth to make it 11-3. In the sixth, Dummer scored on a wild pitch while Hall drove in a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 13-4.
Against Felician, MSUM pounded out a season-high 16 hits, led by senior designated hitter
Kristina Villalobos and Klug with three hits each. Williamson was 2-for-4 with two RBI while Dummer was 2-for-3. Freshman outfielder
Madison Paige was 1-for-4 with two RBI while Tweet was 1-for-1 with an RBI. Meeker and
Becky Volkert had hits for MSUM.
MSUM managed 16 hits but also left 10 runners on base. Felician had 15 hits.
"It was a good offensive battle between the two teams but we couldn't find a way to come through at the end," Fehl said. "It is good to see us hitting the ball and that will help us the rest of the week."
Hall started and received a no-decision, giving up four earned runs in 1.2 innings. Volkert was tagged with the loss, giving up two earned runs in 3.1 innings. White pitched the final two innings and gave up two runs.
MSUM led 2-0 in the first thanks to a two-run single from Paige. Felician scored four times in the second to take a 4-2 lead.
An RBI single by Williamson made it 4-3 in the second, and the Dragons tied the game in the fourth thanks to another RBI single by Williamson.
A pair of two-run homers proved to be the difference in the final innings as Felician built an 8-4 lead. The Dragons cut the lead to 8-5 in the seventh on a single from Tweet. MSUM brought the tying run to the plate but a groundout ended the contest.
MSUM is right back in action on Wednesday when it faces Bentley at 8 a.m. Central time and West Virginia Wesleyan at 1 p.m. CT.
