BISMARCK, N.D. – Four players had two hits to help the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team earn a 7-3 win over the University of Mary on Wednesday in Bismarck, N.D. The win gave MSUM a split on the day as Mary edged the Dragons 1-0 in the opener.
In the second game, senior first baseman
Lauren Meeker was 2-for-4 with two RBI, while sophomore catcher
Savanah Tweet was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Senior right fielder
Hannah Klug was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Senior center fielder
Carly Williamson was 1-for-3 with a triple, two RBI and two runs scored. Sophomore shortstop
Taylor Roddie was 2-for-4 with an RBI. Senior second baseman
Jill Fox was 1-for-3 with a run scored while freshman third baseman
Emma Dummer had an RBI and a run scored.
Freshman
Becky Volkert started and went two-plus innings, allowing two runs, one earned. Freshman pitcher
Jordan Hall picked up the win in relief, going five innings and allowing one earned run. She gave up seven hits, striking out two while walking two.
"The first game, we couldn't find a way to come up with a hit with runners on base. The second game, we came out and changed that around," MSUM head coach
Kelsey Fehl said. "We came up with some big hits to extend innings and score runs. Our pitchers did a great job today and were able to hold them in check."
Since the games were originally scheduled to be played in Moorhead but moved to Bismarck because of weather, MSUM was the home team in both. Mary scored a run in the top of the second to take a 1-0 lead but the Dragons came back with a five-run rally in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.
Meeker reached on an error to lead off the inning, and sophomore
KyLee Bartholomay pinch-ran for her. Freshman
Payton Gaber's fielder's choice forced out Bartholomay at second. Tweet ripped a double to move Gaber to third. Dummer's fielder's choice scored Gaber, tying the game at 1-1. Fox's fielder's choice scored Tweet. One out later, Williamson tripled to right fielder to score two runners, pushing the lead to 4-1. Roddie followed with an RBI single to left to score Williamson and MSUM had a five-run rally to take a 5-1 lead.
Mary cut the lead to 5-2 with a run in the third. The Dragons pushed the lead to five runs in the fourth. Klug led off with a single, and Williamson walked. A groundout moved both runners ahead. One out later, Meeker singled through the right side to score Williamson and Klug, making it 7-2. Mary added a run in the fifth to make it 7-3, but left seven runners on base against Hall over the final three innings and was unable to cut further into the lead.
In the opener, Williamson was 2-for-4, while Meeker and Dummer were each 1-for-3. Roddie was 1-for-4 while freshman outfielder
Madison Paige reached twice on walks.
Freshman
Tori White pitched well in defeat for MSUM, giving up one earned run in seven innings. She struck out four and walked one.
The Dragons left eight runners on base in the game. They left two runners on in the third and seventh innings; in the seventh, Fox reached on an error and was forced at second by a fielder's choice. Williamson reached on a fielder's choice to put the winning run at first, but a groundout ended the threat.
MSUM is scheduled to host Concordia-Moorhead at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday. Because of field and weather conditions the doubleheader may be moved. Check msumdragons.com for updates.
