Dragon Softball Swept by Winona State in Finale

MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team ended its season with a 8-0 and 5-0 losses to league power Winona State on Sunday in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.
 
MSUM was held to three hits in each of the game as the Warriors, who are now 46-9 on the season and will finish in at least second in the NSIC pending the outcome of Minnesota State's Game 2 at Minot State.

The five Dragon seniors were honored before the game, from left:
Kristina Villalobos, Lauren Meeker, Jill Fox, Hannah Klug  and Carly Williamson.


In the opener, the Dragons had three hits – singles by senior outfielder Carly Williamson, senior second baseman Jill Fox and freshman outfielder Madison Paige.
 
Freshman pitcher Tori White took the loss, going just 2/3 of an inning and allowing five earned runs and six hits. Freshman Becky Volkert was solid in relief, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing three earned runs.
 
A five-run first inning proved to be the difference as the Warriors built an early lead and added one run in the fifth and two runs in the sixth.
 
In Game 2, freshman designated hitter Payton Gaber was 2-for-3 with a double for MSUM while Paige was 1-for-1 and hit by a pitch.
 
Freshman pitcher Jordan Hall took the loss, going seven innings and allowing 11 hits, five runs (four earned). She struck out one and walked two.
 
A four-run second inning proved to be the difference in the second game. The Dragons did manage four baserunners but were unable to get runs across.
 
Prior to the games, MSUM honored five seniors who have combined to play in more than 700 games as Dragons: Williamson, Fox, first baseman Lauren Meeker, outfielder  Hannah Klug and third baseman Kristina Villalobos.
