MARSHALL, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team was swept by Southwest Minnesota State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action on Saturday. The Mustangs prevailed by scores of 5-2 and 8-0.
In the opening game, senior first baseman
Lauren Meeker was 2-for-3 with a double, while senior center fielder
Carly Williamson was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Freshman designated hitter
Payton Gaber was 1-for-3 with an RBI while freshman third baseman
Emma Dummer had an RBI. The Dragons managed just four hits in the game. For the second straight doubleheader, MSUM was without the services of RBI and doubles leader
Madison Paige, who is out with an injury.
Freshman pitcher
Jordan Hall took the loss for MSUM, going six innings and allowing five earned runs. She allowed seven hits, striking out two while walking four.
MSUM led 2-0 in the first inning. Williamson doubled to lead off the game and moved to third on a groundout. Gaber singled to score Williamson with the game's first run. Meeker followed with a single to move Gaber to second. Gaber would score on a fielder's choice by Dummer to make it 2-0.
A four-run second inning by SMSU proved to be the difference as the Mustangs took the lead. The Dragons allowed just one run the rest of the way but were unable to get closer.
In the second game, Williamson, sophomore shortstop
Taylor Roddie and Meeker had hits for the Dragons. Williamson had her fourth stolen base of the year.
Freshman
Becky Volkert was tagged with the loss, giving up five runs, four earned, in two-plus innings. She struck out three and walked one. Freshman
Tori White allowed three earned runs in two innings, striking out two.
Another four-run inning in the third broke the game open for SMSU, who added three more runs in the fourth to make it 8-0.
MSUM travels to Minot State for a Wednesday doubleheader that begins at 2 p.m. in Minot, N.D.
