MINOT, N.D. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team swept Minot State University in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference opener 25-17, 25-22, 25-12.
The Dragon offense was led by senior hitter
Tyann Caspers with 11 kills, while
Lauren Kiewiet and
Kaylyn Jenkins had seven kills each. Freshman setter
Ellie Hoyt dished out 30 set assists. Junior libero
Monica Vega led the defense with 14 digs, while Kiewiet had nine. Hoyt and Jenkins each had three service aces.
The only lead the Beavers saw in the first set was within the first three points, from there the Dragons scored nine unanswered points. With MSUM leading 12-3, Minot State was unable to catch up and the Dragons took set one, 25-17.
Set two was much closer, with there never being more than a two point difference. The Dragons were up 23-22 when a kill by Caspers and an attack error by Minot State gave MSU Moorhead a 25-22 set victory. MSUM carried their momentum into the third set where they started off with a 5-0 lead, and much like the first set the Dragons carried the lead giving them to a 25-12 victory.
The Dragons will return home to take on U-Mary in their home opener Saturday at 3 p.m.
