Dragon Football Returns Home to Face Concordia-St. Paul

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead football team will look to snap a two-game losing streak when they host the Concordia-St. Paul University Golden Bears. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. at Scheels Field at Alex Nemzek Stadium.

MSUM and Concordia-St. Paul both have a record of 1-2 so far this season.

The game will be broadcast on WDAY's XTRA and online with Dragon broadcasters Steve d'Eustachio and Larry Scott on the call. Live video, stats, and audio can be found at msumdragons.com.

An MSUM win over CSP would be…
-The Dragons second straight win over Concordia.
-The Dragons first win over the Golden Bears in Moorhead since 2006
-The third win over the Golden Bears in the series history

Series History
This will be the 12th meeting between MSUM and Concordia-St. Paul. The Golden Bears lead the series 9-2, however the Dragons won the previous meeting 30-28 on a last-second touchdown.

The Head Coaches
Steve Laqua is in his seventh season as MSUM's head coach with a record of 25-44 at the school. Shannon Currier is in his sixth season overall as head coach of the Golden Bears, and in his second season in his second stint as head coach. His record at Concordia is 35-23, with a 4-14 record in this stint.

About MSUM
The Dragons are on a two-game losing streak, having lost last week 42-14 to Winona State. For the second straight week, the Dragons struggled with turnovers, as they committed five that led to 28 Winona State points. Senior quarterback Demetrius Carr was 25-41 passing for 275 yards and three interceptions. He also rushed 11 times, for 38 yards and two scores. Senior wide receiver Damon Gibson had nine catches for 134 yards, while senior receiver Hunter Braaten had seven catches for 57 yards. Senior running back Austin Stone had 20 carries for 69 yards. Senior linebacker Abe Roerich led the Dragon defense with eight tackles, a forced fumble, and a fumble recovery. Junior defensive back Michael Strand had six tackles and a pass breakup, while sophomore defensive lineman Miles Baggett had a sack. Junior cornerback Jerry Raye contributed an interception.

For the season, Carr has thrown for 933 yards and five touchdowns.  Gibson has caught 29 passes for 399 yards and three scores while senior receiver Hunter Braaten has 20 catches for 224 yards and a score. Austin Stone leads the ground game with 171 yards on 48 carries.

Senior Abe Roehrich leads MSUM's defense with 18 tackles. Junior defensive backs Aaron Doan and Michael Strand each have 127 tackles.

About Concordia-St. Paul
The Golden Bears are coming off a 56-21 loss to St. Cloud State. Sophomore quarterback Maxon Hutton had 15 completions for 249 yards and three touchdowns. Sophomore Darnell Rolle rushed for 29 yards. Elias Arlington had five catches for 126 yards and one touchdown, while Marcus Gustaveson has three catches for 66 yards and one touchdown. The Golden Bear defense was led by Brian Szutkowski, who had 11 tackles, while Billy Brown had eight tackles and one sack.

The Golden Bears average 20.7 points per game on offense and have recorded 322.7 total yards per game.  Hutton has completed 43.8 percent of his passes for 580 yards and five touchdowns. Rolle has rushed for 173 yards and five touchdowns to lead the ground game. Gustaveson is the top receiver with nien catches for 182 yards and two touchdowns.

Teams have compiled 1279 yards of total offense against Concordia-St. Paul's defense.  Szutkowski leads the Golden Bear defense with 23 tackles and two pass breakups. Mitch Zillman has 19 tackles.

Carr Closes In
Senior quarterback Demetrius Carr is closing in on two school records. Carr is second all-time in passing yards at MSUM with 6,762 yards, trailing only Jake Hodge. Carr is also second all-time in total offense at 7,913 yards, trailing Hodge's 8,608. Carr threw for 2,710 yards last season, second-highest single season total in school history. Carr leads the NSIC in total offense per game (340) and passing yards (933).

Defense Dominates
MSUM's defense played a strong all-around game in the win at Augustana. MSUM surrendered 127 yards of offense — fewest by any NSIC team in Week 1 — while allowing only seven points, second-lowest total in the Steve Laqua coaching era.  MSUM ranks seventh in the NSIC in total defense.  Five different Dragons had sacks in the win at Augie.

Gibson Starts Strong
After a school record-setting 2016 campaign, senior receiver Damon Gibson has started off the 2017 campaign strong. Through three games, he has an NSIC-best 29 receptions for 399 yards and three touchdowns and leads the NSIC with 9.7 receptions per game. He caught nine passes for 134 yards against Winona State. He has moved into fourth place on the all-time reception list at MSUM with 165. Gibson recorded the 16th 100-yard receiving game of his career against Winona State.

Braaten Nears Top Five
Senior receiver Hunter Braaten is also off to a strong start. He is third in the NSIC with 20 receptions and 6.7 receptions per game. He also has a receiving touchdown. In his four-year Dragon career, Braaten has 129 receptions for 1,417 yards and nine touchdowns. Braaten trails Bruce Green (146 receptions) 16 catches for fifth on the MSUM all-time list.

Bresnahan All-Purpose Threat
Redshirt freshman Grady Bresnahan is sixth in the NSIC in all-purpose yards per game at 124.7. Bresnahan has 154 receiving yards, 90 punt return yards and 130 kick return yards this season. He averaged 14.5 yards per punt return against Winona State, with a long of 17 yards.

Miles Makes His Mark
Sophomore Miles Baggett is making a big impact from his defensive line position. He is second in the NSIC with 1.83 tackles for loss per game. Baggett has five solo stops for loss. He also has a forced fumble and two sacks this season.

Week 4 Under Laqua
MSUM is 1-5 in the Steve Laqua era during week 4 games. The Dragons have lost five straight week 4 games, including a 36-34 loss to Concordia St. Paul in 2013 and a 28-14 loss to Minnesota State last season. MSUM lost to Southwest Minnesota State 48-9 in 2015. In 2014, MSUM lost to Sioux Falls 73-21. In 2012, they lost to Minnesota State 24-0. Their lone week 4 win in the Steve Laqua era came in 2011 when they defeated Minnesota Crookston 29-22 in overtime. 2011 was Laqua's first season.
