MSUM Volleyball Returns Home to Face No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team is now 7-6, 2-3 NSIC. The Dragons fell to both Upper Iowa and Winona State in three sets last week. This week MSUM returns home for the first half of a four-game home stand. The Dragons will first take on No. 2-ranked Concordia-St. Paul, Friday at 6 p.m.and will cap the weekend off vs. Minnesota State, Saturday at 3 p.m.

Scouting the Opposition...
No. 2 Concordia-St. Paul University
The Golden Bears are now 12-1, 5-0 NSIC with its only loss being against No. 1-ranked Southwest Minnesota State, 3-1, early this season in nonconference play. As a team, CSP is hitting .265 on the season. Brooklyn Lewis leads the team in kills with 171, averaging 3.42 per set. Mariya Sampson has racked up 151 kills, while Sara Macek has 149. Setter Elizabeth Mohr holds an NSIC best of 659 set assists, averaging 13.18 per set. Tori Hanson leads the back row defense with 162 digs, while Hope Schiller isn't far behind with 156. Macek leads the team in total blocks with 42, while Shelby Seurer has 38 blocks and Schiller has 21. Brady Starkey is in his 15th season as the Golden Bear's head coach with an overall record of 465-46 at the school. CSP leads the all-time series against MSUM, 26-8, including last years 3-0 victory over the Dragons.

Minnesota State University Mankato
The Mavericks are 8-5, 2-3 after picking up two conference wins this past week over U-Mary and Minot State. Sydney Powell leads the team in kills with 149, while Alivia Garbe has 102 and Ashton Lee has 87. As a team, the Mavericks are hitting .247 on the season compared to their opponents at .172. Setting has been split between Micayla Porter and Autumn Risch who have 233 and 228 set assists, respectively. Mara Quam leads MSU in digs with 180, while Garbe has 117 digs, and Powell has 101. Anissa Janzig leads the net defense with 33 total blocks, averaging  .75 blocks per set. Lee has made 26 total blocks, while Powell has 19. The Mavericks are led by head coach Lori Rittenhouse-Wollmuth. The Mavericks lead the all-time series against the Dragons, 23-12, including last years 3-2 victory over MSUM.

Dragons Return Home
MSUM volleyball returns home this week for a challenging four-game home stand. Three of the four teams the Dragons will face are either ranked in the AVCA Coaches Poll or have received votes. The Dragons will face No. 2-ranked Concordia-St. Paul and Minnesota State this weekend and will cap off their home stand next weekend against No. 1-ranked Southwest Minnesota State and Sioux Falls who has been receiving votes in the poll.

Vega Keeps Digging
Monica Vega added 34 more digs this past weekend with 23 at Upper Iowa and 11 at Winona State. Vega is ranked third in the NSIC with a total of 248 digs this season, averaging 5.39 per set.

Fantastic Freshmen
With such a young roster this year several freshmen have made a big impact on the team. Setter Ellie Hoyt has racked up 388 set assists, averaging 8.43 per set. Lauren Kiewiet leads the team in service aces with 14, second in assists (48) and is third in kills (83) and blocks (31). Kylie Kanwischer leads the team and is third best in the NSIC with 54 total blocks, averaging 1.17 per set. Sarah Petrbok has also made a noteworthy performance with 76 kills, 116 digs, and eight service aces.

Dragons to Face Tough Slate This Season
MSUM's 28-game 2017 schedule features seven matches against teams ranked in the AVCA Preseason Top-25, five of which are in the top-10. The Dragons play No. 1 Concordia - St. Paul, No. 2 Southwest Minnesota State, No. 5 Winona State, No. 7 Minnesota Duluth, No. 10 Augustana, No. 13 Winona State and No. 24 Northern State.

Oh Captain, My Captain
Minnesota State University Moorhead announced its captains for the 2017 season. Junior libero/defensive specialist Monica Vega, sophomore middle blocker Sarah Hagler and senior outside hitter Tyann Caspers will be MSUM's captains.
