MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team put up a fight against No. 2-ranked Concordia-St. Paul but came up short in four sets, 25-23, 25-20, 22-25, 25-19.
MSUM is now 7-7 overall and 2-4 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play, compared to CSP who is now 13-1, 6-0 NSIC.
Freshman
Sarah Petrbok led the Dragons in kills with 14 and also added 18 digs. Sophomores
Kaylyn Jenkins and
Courtney Selbitschka had 12 and seven kills, respectively. Freshman
Lauren Kiewiet had 23 set assists and a service ace, while setter
Ellie Hoyt had 20 assists and one service ace as well. Libero
Monica Vega led the back row defense with 20 digs. Freshman Kylie Kanwisher led net defense with six total blocks, while Kiewiet and Selbitschka each had four.
The Dragons started the match on top, leading in the first set consistently until the score was 20-18. However, four straight kills and an attack error on the Dragons edged the Golden Bears to a 23-20 lead. Although MSUM came back to tie the set, 23-23, with two kills from Caspers and one from Kanwischer, a kill by CSP and attack error by Petrbok gave the Golden Bears a close 25-23 set win.
The Golden Bears led the second set from the beginning. Although the Dragons held on, keeping the lead small, CSP took set two, 25-20. MSUM had the third set tied at 4-4, when five consecutive points gave them a 9-4 lead over CSP. Although the Golden Bears were able to close in on the lead eventually, with MSUM leading 24-22, a service error by CSP gave the Dragons a 25-22 victory in set three.
Despite the Dragons hard fought efforts, Concordia was able to take the lead early in the fourth set leading them to a 25-19 set win to take the match 3-1.
MSUM will return to Nemzek Fieldhouse tomorrow to take on Minnesota State-Mankato at 3 p.m.
