QUINCY, Ill. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team split two matches during the first day of competition at the Quincy Tournament. MSUM defeated Wayne State University (Mich.) 25-19, 24-26, 25-21, 25-17 and fell to Quincy University 25-18, 25-13, 25-19.
In the Dragons' 3-1 victory over the Warriors, sophomore hitter
Courtney Selbitschka led the team's offense with 16 kills on a .552 hitting percentage, while freshman hitter
Lauren Kiewiet added 11 kills and four service aces. Freshman setter
Ellie Hoyt led in assists (36) and tied with 12 digs with Selbitschka. Junior libero
Monica Vega wasn't far behind with 10 digs. Freshman
Kylie Kanwischer had four solo blocks and two assists.
MSUM started the match out strong, taking the first set 25-19 before falling in the second set to WSU 26-24. Set 3 was tied at 9-9 but an error by the Warriors and back-to-back kills by Selbitschka and Kiewiet put the Dragons up 12-9. From there the Warriors were unable to catch up and MSUM won the third set 25-21. The fourth set was similar to the third with WSU leading 5-3 early in the set but six consecutive points put the Dragons ahead, eventually allowing them to take the final set 25-17.
In the 3-0 loss to Quincy, sophomore hitter
Sarah Hagler led with five kills, while sophomore hitter
Kaylyn Jenkins and Selbitschka each had four. Hoyt had 21 assists and 13 digs. Vega performed well on defense with 21 digs and Kiewiet added 14 more to the efforts.
The Dragons led through the beginning of the first set 8-7 but the momentum turned when Quincy scored four consecutive points. Quincy carried the momentum into the final two sets on its way to the sweep.
The Dragons are now 5-1 overall as they go into Day 2 at the Quincy tournament tomorrow facing Northwest Missouri State University at 9 a.m and will finish the day with McKendree University at 2 p.m.
