Balance, Defense Carry Dragon Women Past No. 11 Augustana, 75-64

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Four Minnesota State University Moorhead player scored in double figures as the Dragons knocked off previously unbeaten and No. 11-ranked Augustana, 75-64 in action Friday night at Nemzek Fieldhouse.
 
MSUM has won six in a row and is now 12-3 overall and 9-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Augustana fell to 14-1 overall and 10-1 in the NSIC.
 
Senior forward Drew Sannes had a big night for MSUM. She had a double-double with 22 points and 15 rebounds and also had two assists and two blocks. Sophomore forward Megan Hintz had her third double-double of the season with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Senior guard Cassidy Thorson had 12 points, three steals and five rebounds while junior guard Jacky Volkert had 12 points, five rebounds and five assists.
 
MSUM shot 54.9 percent (28-of-51) and had a commanding 44-26 edge in rebounds.  The Dragons held the Vikings to 18 points under their season scoring average and to just 36.8 percent (25-of-68) shooting from the field.
 
The Dragons never trailed in the game. They opened the contest on a 12-2 run, led by five points from Sannes and took a 44-31 lead into halftime. Sannes had 12 first-half points for MSUM.
 
The MSUM lead grew to 20 at 58-38 on a Sannes layup with 3:59 left in the third.
 
The Vikings cut the Dragon lead to five with 2:22 left at 69-64 but would not score again. MSUM went a perfect 6-of-6 from the free throw line, with four shots coming from Sannes, to secure the 11-point win.
 
Freshman point guard Lauren Fech had five points and three assists for MSUM.
 
The Dragons host Wayne State (Neb.) at 4 p.m. on Saturday to wrap up the four-game homestand.
 
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game : Tonight's win ended Augustana's 16-game regular season conference winning streak. Prior to tonight, the Vikings' last NSIC regular season loss was a 74-70 setback in St. Cloud on Jan. 28, 2017.
