ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team fell to St. Cloud State University, 69-55, Saturday night in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action.
MSUM fell to 5-15 overall and 3-11 in NSIC play, while the Huskies improved 13-6, 9-4 NSIC.
Junior guard Travaun Coad led the Dragons with 13 points and seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Johnny Beeninga wasn't far behind with 12 points and also had a team-best of four assists. Tanner Kretchman had nine points and two assists, while Addison Park added eight points and four rebounds. Jake Johnson had six rebounds and five points off the bench for MSUM.
The Dragons shot 41.3 percent (19-of-46) from the field compared to St. Cloud State at 50 percent (31-of-62). The Huskies held a 33-27 edge in rebounds over the MSUM.
The first ten minutes of the first half were back-and-forth with SCSU pulling ahead and the Dragons coming back to tie. The game remained tied 15-15 when the Huskies went on a 15-4 to take an 11-point lead. 3-pointers by Johnson and Kretchman would cut the lead to five but SCSU came back to hold a 36-27 lead going into half time.
St. Cloud State stretched lead to as many as 16 in the second half. Coad hit a 3-pointer and layup, while Beeninga also drained a three to cut the lead to eight points with just over five minutes to play. The Huskies would outscore MSUM 9-3 for the remainder of the game to lead them to their ninth NSIC win.
The Dragons return home to host Southwest Minnesota State University, Friday at 8 p.m., and University of Sioux Falls, Saturday at 6 p.m.
