MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team fell to University of Sioux Falls in a close Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contest Saturday, 70-67. A last second 3-pointer by Trevon Evans of Sioux Falls sealed the win for the Cougars.
MSUM fell to 6-16 overall and 4-12 in the NSIC, while USF improved to 14-8, 9-7 NSIC.
Senior guard
Tanner Kretchman led the Dragons with 23 points and two assists. Junior guard
Travaun Coad recorded his seventh double-double of the seasons with 17 points and ten rebounds. Junior forward
Addison Park had 11 points and four rebounds, while sophomore guard
Johnny Beeninga scored six points. Kretchman added five rebounds on the night, while
Matt Anderson,
Briton Bussman and
Jake Johnson all had three rebounds for MSUM.
The Dragons shot 43.1 percent (25-of-58) from the field compared to the Cougars at 40 percent (26-of-65). Sioux Falls held a 38-34 edge in rebounds.
USF held a 20-11 lead in the first half when the Dragons went on a 17-4 run to pull ahead, 28-24. However, the Cougars would come back to hold a 34-30 lead going into halftime.
MSUM tied the game, 41-41, early in the second half thanks to seven points by Kretchman. The teams would trade leads over the next 15 minutes until the score was 67-67 with 1:50 to play. A series of turnovers would result in Sioux Falls having possession with 30 second to go. Trevon Evans hit a 3-pointer within the last second to clinch the NSIC win for Sioux Falls.
The Dragons begin a four-game road series beginning at Winona State Feb. 2 at 8 p.m.
Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: Tonight was the first home loss to the University of Sioux Falls (2-1) and only the second setback since this series began six years ago. The only other time USF beat the Dragons was when they posted a 92-70 decision in Sioux Falls on Jan. 3, 2014.
