MSUM Men Head South to Take on Winona State and Upper Iowa

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team (6-16, 4-12 NSIC) will take on Winona State University and Upper Iowa University on the road this weekend.

The Dragons hit the road to take on Winona State, Friday at 8 p.m. before traveling to face Upper Iowa, Saturday at 6 p.m.

LOOKING BACK...
MSUM split a pair of NSIC games last weekend at home, defeating Southwest Minnesota State, 85-78 before falling to Sioux Falls, 70-67.

In the Dragons' victory over the Mustangs, Johnny Beeninga led with 23 points and five assists, while Travaun Coad had 21 points and eight rebounds.  Addison Park added 13 points and four rebounds while Tanner Kretchman had 10 points and two assists.

Against Sioux Falls, Kretchman scored a team-high 23 points, while Coad had a double-double with 17 points and ten rebounds. Park added 11 point and four rebounds. USF scored a last second 3-pointer to edge the Dragons.

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION...
Winona State University
The Warriors are 15-7 overall and 10-6 in the NSIC after picking conference wins over Minot State (70-65) and U-Mary (71-62) last weekend. WSU is led by Corey Jeffs who is averaging 12.5 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. Tommy Gathje is averaging 12.4 points and 4.5 rebound, while Caleb Wagner is averaging 11.2 points and 4.7 assists per game. Mason Domask is also averaging double figures at 10.4 points per game.  As a team, Winona State averages 77.2 points per game while holding its opponents to 71.0 points. The Warriors also hold a 33.5-32.0 edge in rebounds over their opponents. Todd Eisner is in his third season as head coach of the Warriors, with a record of 27-29.

Upper Iowa University
The Peacocks enter the weekend 13-12 overall and 6-10 in the NSIC. They picked up an overtime win over U-Mary, 92-86 before defeating Minot State, 99-89. Upper Iowa is led by Carson Parker who is averaging 16.2 points and 5.7 assists per game. Joe Smoldt is averaging 13.3 points and leading the NSIC 3-point field goals made with 2.9. Dennis Austin III is averaging 12.8 points per game, while Kam Rowan is averaging 10.5 points. Munachiso Okonkwo is leading with 6.8 rebounds per game. The Peacocks are averaging 80 points per game while its opponents are averaging 80.6 points per game. Upper Iowa is being outrebounded by its opponents 36.2-33.4  Brooks McKowen is in his fifth season as head coach of the Peacocks with a record of 71-55.

MORE ABOUT MSUM...
Kretchman Breaks Records

Senior Tanner Kretchman became the all-time career assist leader earlier this season in MSUM's victory over Northern Michigan. Kretchman now has 536 career assists. For the first time in the school's history Kretchman has posted back-to-back seasons with at least 200 assists. In MSUM's loss to Northern State he became the first MSUM player to reach 500 assists. Kretchman is also eighth all-time in scoring with 1,497 points and is now second in career three-point field goals made with 244. The senior is also second-best in the NSIC this season in three-point field goals made, averaging 2.8 per game.

Coad Hits 7th Double-Double
Junior guard Travaun Coad hit his seventh double-double of the season against Sioux Falls, Jan. 27 with 17 points and ten rebounds. The junior guard became the first Dragon to earn a double-double in four or more consecutive games since Alex Novak (Feb. 16-27, 2013) when he had five in a row Jan. 5-19. Coad leads the Dragons in double-doubles this season.

Consistency From Park
Junior Addison Park has been a steady player for the Dragons to rely on this season. Park has scored in double-digits is 14 games this season, including a career-high of 21 points at Northern State. The junior is averaging 4.4 rebound per game and also holds a team-best in blocks with 12. Park leads the Dragons in field goal percentage with .571 (105-of-184), ranking 11th in the NSIC.

Sophomores Shine
With only one senior on the team this year some younger players stepped up to take a bigger role on the team. The Dragons starting lineup includes sophomores Johnny Beeninga and Matt Anderson. Beeninga scored a career-high 26 points in the Dragons win at U-Mary. He is second on the team, averaging 14.2 points per game and adds 49 assists. Anderson is averaging 6.1 points and 3.4 rebounds per game, including a season-high of nine rebounds at Concordia-St. Paul. He also adds five blocks and three steals.

Offensive Distribution
The Dragons have gotten some great offensive distribution this season with four players averaging at least 11.0 points per game. Tanner Kretchman (15.5), Johnny Beeninga (14.2) , Travaun Coad (13.8),  and Addison Park (11.2).

All-Time vs. Opponents
MSUM will meet Winona State for the 135th time with the Warriors leading  the series, 79-75.

The Dragons and the Peacocks are meeting for the 21st time with MSUM leading the series 13-7.

The Dragons will remain on the road next weekend playing at Bemidji State, Feb. 9 at 8 p.m. and at Minnesota Crookston, Feb. 10 at 6 p.m.
