BURNSVILLE, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team has been picked to finish second in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference according to a preseason poll of the league's coaches released on Thursday.
MSUM received 185 points and three first-place votes in the poll. Sioux Falls was picked as the preseason favorite, receiving 208 points and nine first-place votes. In the NSIC North Division poll MSUM was picked to finish second behind Minnesota Duluth; the Bulldogs received 44 points while MSUM received 43.
Senior guard
Jacky Volkert was listed as MSUM's Player to Watch. She averaged 13.4 points, 4.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game a year ago and set the new MSUM single-season record with 156 assists. She is closing in on 1,000 career points as a Dragon, entering this season with 912.
Junior forward
Megan Hintz is back after averaging 11.6 points and 6.6 rebounds per game a year ago. Sophomore guard
Lauren Fech started all 29 games at point guard last year and recorded 74 assists. Sophomore guard
Kiley Borowicz is also back after appearing in 28 games and averaging 7.3 points per game.
MSUM head coach
Karla Nelson is in her 19th season; she has recorded 18 straight winning seasons in her Dragon tenure.
The Dragons host Minnesota Morris in an exhibition on Nov. 2 before opening the regular season on Nov. 9 vs. Arkansas Tech in Kansas City, Mo.
