VANCOUVER, B.C. – A career-high 20 points from senior forward Jake Johnson guided the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team to a 103-68 victory over Douglas College (B.C.) on Monday in Vancouver. MSUM concludes the Simon Fraser Classic with a 2-2 record.
The Dragons improve to 5-2 overall.
For the second-consecutive game five players scored in double-digits with Johnson's 20 points leading the way. Senior forward Addison Park chipped in 19 points and five rebounds. Freshman Bryce Irsfeld had 16 points and a career-high ten assists. Freshman guard Gavin Baumgartner had 17 points, three rebounds, and two steals. Freshman center Jesse Bergh posted a career-high 12 rebounds.
MSUM shot 55.4 percent (41-of-74) for the game compared to 41.7 percent (30-of-72) from Douglas College. MSUM out-rebounded Douglas College 48-to-31,
After early back-and-forth action, the Dragons took a 14-12 lead at the 13:45 mark thanks to a three-pointer from Park. Douglas College pulled within two at 34-32 with 3:40 remaining in the half, but Johnson posted eight points down the stretch to allow MSUM to pull away with a 47-34 lead into halftime. Johnson had 14 points in the first half, and Irsfeld had seven assists.
A 12-point run in the second half gave the Dragons an 82-58 lead with 6:48 left on the clock. Four players scored during the run. MSUM saw their largest lead of the night after a layup from senior guard Briton Bussman brought the score to 103-68 in the final minute of play.
The Dragons return home to face Mayville State (N.D.) on Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. in Nemzek Fieldhouse.
