The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team opens NSIC play on Saturday when it travels to Aberdeen, S.D., to face Northern State. Tipoff is at 4 p.m. at the Barnett Center in Aberdeen.
Northern State was picked to finish eighth in the NSIC preseason coaches poll while MSUM was picked to finish second. In the north division MSUM was picked to finish second while Northern State was picked to finish fourth.
MSUM finished 4-2 in non conference play.
MSUM won a pair of games at the Cherry Creek Holiday Inn Classic in Denver last weekend, beating Metro State, 62-41 and Colorado Christian, 74-61. Sophomore guard
Kiley Borowicz, who was named the NSIC North Division Player of the Week, averaged 17 points, 4.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists per game for the weekend and scored a season-high 20 points in the win over Colorado Christian. Junior forward
Megan Hintz averaged 11.0 points and 8.5 rebounds per game while redshirt freshman forward
Peyton Boom averaged 10.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game.
Hintz averages 12.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per game for MSUM to lead the Dragons in both categories.  Borowicz averages 12.3 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. Boom averages 6.7 rebounds per game, second-most on the team, while senior guard
Jacky Volkert averages 4.3 assists per game to go with a 7.8 points per game average.
As a team MSUM scores 61.5 points per game and shoots 38.6 percent from the field. The Dragons outrebound their foes 44.8-32.7 and allow 54.7 points per game.
Karla Nelson is in her 19th season as the MSUM head coach with a record of 327-190 at the school. Nelson is the second-longest tenured head coach in the NSIC.
About Northern State
Northern State is 2-3 on the season after losing to East Central 58-52 and Emporia State 72-60 last weekend.
Lexi Wadsworth averages 11.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game for the Wolves while Sara Tvedt averages 11.0. Brianna Kusler averages 10.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game while Brooke Luitjens averages 10.2. As a team the Wolves are scoring 68.0 points per game and shooting 43.3 percent from the field.
Northern out rebounds its foes 38.0-31.2 and allows 65.6 points per game.
Paula Krueger is in her first season as the Northern State head coach.
