Dragon Volleyball Defeats Minnesota Crookston in Season Finale

CROOKSTON, Minn. -- The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team wrapped up the regular season with a road win over Minnesota Crookston. The Dragons won 3-1 by scores of 26-28, 25-23, 25-22, 25-12.

MSUM concluded their season with an overall record of 11-16 and 7-13 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. Minnesota Crookston falls to 4-24 overall and 2-18 in the NSIC.

Junior middle blocker Kaylyn Jenkins continued her dominant week with a team-high 18 kills and four blocks. Freshman outside hitter Madison Wassink had 15 kills, and sophomore middle blocker Kylie Kanwischer followed with 13 kills on 22 errorless swings (.591 hitting percentage). Redshirt freshman Becca Koehn had 29 assists and 11 digs, while sophomore Lauren Kiewiet had 19 assists and 11 digs. Senior libero Monica Vega put on a show with an impressive 31 digs, and freshman outside hitter Amanda Carlson followed with 22 digs.

In the first set, MSUM pulled within one at 7-6 off a kill from freshman outside hitter Lexi Gilbertson. A scoring run from the Dragons gave them a 14-9 lead. Jenkins contributed three kills in the five-point run. UMC managed to catch up and tie the game at 24-24, and a late kick gave the Golden Eagles a 28-26 victory. The teams were tied eight times throughout the first set.

Kiewiet had a service ace to put the Dragons up 4-3 in set two. The Golden Eagles would not allow for much separation throughout the set, but the Dragons went up 10-8 off a Jenkins solo block. A five-point run from MSUM gave the team a 17-12 lead. Wassink had all three kills for MSUM during the run. MSUM forced a UMC timeout at set point and came back to claim a second set win at 25-23.

Set three was another back-and-forth battle, but several UMC errors gave the Dragons a 16-13 lead. The Dragons were the first to reach 20 points as a Kiewiet kill gave MSUM a 20-17 lead. Koehn closed out the second set with a service ace that claimed a 25-22 victory.

The Dragons entered the fourth set with purpose and went up 9-1 early. The Dragon defense continued to put on a show and forced UMC out of system. Kanwischer put the Dragons up 15-7 with a kill. MSUM wrapped up the set with a 25-12 victory. MSUM hit .250 in the set compared to -.194 from UMC.
