Dragon Men Overcome Deficit to Defeat Minot State, 91-86

MOORHEAD, Minn -- Freshman guard Gavin Baumgartner matched a career-high 28 points to lead the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team to a 91-86 win over Minot State on Saturday at Alex Nemzek Fieldhouse. The Dragons claimed a 78-77 lead at the 2:47 mark in the second half and padded the lead in part to four good free throws down the stretch.

MSUM improves to 8-5 overall and 2-3 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while Minot State falls to 5-9 overall and 0-5 in the NSIC.

Baumgartner led the team with 28 points and five assists, and senior forward Addison Park followed with 15 points. Junior guard Johnny Beeninga and senior guard Travaun Coad followed with 14 points and 13 points, respectively. Coad led the Dragons with seven rebounds.

MSUM shot 44.6 percent (29-of-65) from the field while Minot State shot 60.3 percent (35-of-58). Minot State out-rebounded the Dragons 35-to-29. The difference maker for MSUM came from the free throw line where they shot 85.7 percent (24-of-28) compared to 54.5 percent (6-of-11) from Minot.

Minot State led by 16 points at the 9:41 mark in the first, but a lay-up and free throw from Baumgartner brought the Dragons within five as they went into the break trailing 44-39.

In the second half, the Dragons tied the game at the 18:23 mark off a three-pointer from Baumgartner. The Beavers managed to take back the lead and led the Dragons by 10 with 6:14 on the clock. MSUM pulled took the 78-77 lead at the 2:47 mark off a Beeninga layup. MSUM remained in control throughout the final minutes, sinking eight free throws, and earned a 91-86 comeback victory.

MSUM is back in action Wednesday as they play host to Northern State at 8 p.m. at the Concordia Memorial Auditorium on the campus of Concordia College.
