CLERMONT, Fla. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team split two games on Day 2 of its Florida trip. MSUM opened with a 6-2 win over Notre Dame (Ohio) before falling to Hillsdale (Mich.) 7-2.
The Dragons are 3-9 in nonconference play so far and are 2-2 on the Florida trip through four games.
In the win over Notre Dame, freshman pitcher Becky Berth scattered 10 hits and gave up two earned runs in going the distance. She struck out five and walked one to pick up her third win of the year.
Junior shortstop
Taylor Roddie had a big game at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a homer, a double, two runs scored and three RBI. Freshman outfielder Elizabeth Johnson was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Freshman first baseman Ashley McCance was 1-for-2 with a run scored, while sophomore outfielder
Madison Paige and junior second baseman Lexie Kennedy each had a hit and an RBI. Senior outfielder
Aunica Novacek added a hit for MSUM.
Roddie had two of the big hits in the game – a solo homer in the third to put MSUM up 3-0 and a two-run double in the fourth to make it 6-0. Her double in the fourth followed an RBI double by Johnson.

In the loss to Hillsdale, McCance was 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored, while sophomore third baseman
Emma Dummer was 2-for-3 with a run scored. Johnson was 1-for-4 with an RBI while sophomore outfielder
Taylor Kelenic was 1-for-2 with an RBI. Roddie was 2-for-4 while sophomore pitcher
Tori White was 1-for-2.
Sophomore
Payton Gaber took the loss on the mound for MSUM, going four innings. She allowed three runs, two earned, while allowing eight hits and one walk. White gave up four runs in three innings but only one was earned.
"We missed some chances at the plate, and had some miscues on defense which led to unearned runs," Fehl said. "The key for us is to be consistent in all phases from one game to the next."
MSUM will face Nyack at 1 p.m. Central time on Wednesday and Holy Family University at 3:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday in Florida.
