MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team earned a 3-1 victory over the University of Minnesota Crookston on Friday by scores of 25-16, 20-25, 25-23, 25-19.
The Dragons improve to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Golden Eagles are now 2-10 overall and 0-4 in NSIC action.
Freshman outside hitter
Amanda Carlson saw plenty of action tonight as she tallied 19 kills on 55 swings. Junior middle blocker
Kaylyn Jenkins hit .458 with 11 kills on 24 errorless swings, while sophomore middle blocker
Kylie Kanwischer provided 10 kills.
Sophomore setter
Lauren Kiewiet chipped in with eight kills and 28 assists, while
Katelyn Selensky added 17 assists. Senior libero
Monica Vega had 22 digs and was followed closely by 20 from Carlson. Junior defensive specialist
Taylor Thorson and Selensky contributed 15 and 12 digs, respectively.
MSUM jumped out to an early 11-5 lead in set one featuring four kills from Carlson. The Dragons would continue to control much of the first set and broke away with kills from Kiewiet, Selensky, Carlson, and Kanwischer to take a commanding 25-16 set one victory.
Set two opened with four-point runs from both teams as MSUM would earn a 10-8 lead off a kill from Wassink. There would be eight tied scores over the course of the match as both teams battled for points. The Dragons fought to pull within one point at 20-21 before UMC close out the set with a four-point run winning the set 25-20.
The Dragons came out strong in set three with a six-point run to go up 6-1. MSUM would maintain the lead until late in the set when UMC grabbed a 22-21 lead. The Dragons regrouped and took set three by a score of 25-23 off a kill from Kanwischer.
The fourth set featured back-and-forth action early as the Dragons would tie the score 5-5 off kills from Carlson and Kanwischer. Momentum was in the Dragons' favor as Carlson provided three consecutive kills to make the score 17-11. The Dragons would win the set by a score of 25-19 thanks to a match-point kill from Jenkins.
