The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team opens the new year with a pair of Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference contests on the road. MSUM will face Winona State at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in Winona, Minn., and at Upper Iowa at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday in Fayette, Iowa.

The Dragons will face Winona State for a 78th time and holds a 48-29 series lead. MSUM has never lost to Upper Iowa, leading the series 22-0.

MSUM  (10-2, 6-0 NSIC) moved its winning streak to eight games with a 60-51 win over Northern State at Concordia on Dec. 19 thanks to 18 points and five assists from senior guard Jacky Volkert.

Sophomore guard Kiley Borowicz averages 14.9 points and 4.5 rebounds per game and also leads with 23 steals.  Junior forward Megan Hintz averages 12.6 points and 10.4 rebounds per game while Volkert is at 11.4 points and leads at 4.0 assists per game.  Redshirt freshman Peyton Boom averages 5.5 rebounds per game.

As a team MSUM scores 65.8 points per game and shoots 41.8 percent from the field. The Dragons outrebound their foes 41.8-31.6 and allow 54.8 points per game.

Karla Nelson is in her 19th season as the MSUM head coach with a record of 335-190 at the school. Nelson is the second-longest tenured head coach in the NSIC.

About Winona State
The Warriors improved to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the NSIC with a 73-45 win over Upper Iowa on Dec. 30. Emily Kieck had 16 points for Winona State.

Gabie Doud leads the Warriors at 11.8 points per game, while Allie Pickrain (11.3), Rachel Novotny (11.0) and Kayla Schaefer (10.7) also average in double figures. Novotny averages 6.7 rebounds.

Winona State scores 64.5 points per game and allows 58.1. The Warriors outrebound their foes 38.6-35.1.

Scott Ballard is in his 15th season as the Winona State head coach with a record of 255-168 at the school.

Upper Iowa, which faces Northern State prior to facing MSUM, enters the week at 3-11 overall and 0-6 in the NSIC after losing to Winona State, 73-45.

Natalie Dinius is the only UIU player to average in double figures at 10.4 points per game while Savannah Domeyer averages 9.2 points. Haley Martin averages 5.9 rebounds per game.

Upper Iowa averages 55.1 points per game and allows 71.5. The Peacocks are being outrebounded 40.7-34.6.

Micha Thompson is in her third season as the Upper Iowa head coach with a record of 9-61.
