No. 24 MSUM Women See 14-Game Winning Streak End in Duluth, 69-53

DULUTH, Minn. — The No. 24 Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team saw its 14-game winning streak end on Friday as the Dragons fell to Minnesota Duluth, 69-53 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action in Duluth.

MSUM fell to 16-3 overall and 12-1 in the NSIC with the loss while UMD improved to 11-5 overall and 10-3 in the league. Despite the loss, MSUM still holds a two-game lead in the NSIC standings over UMD, Augustana and Concordia-St. Paul. Augie plays CSP on Saturday.

Junior forward Megan Hintz had 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting while adding a team-best seven rebounds for the Dragons while sophomore guard Kiley Borowicz added 14. Senior guard Jacky Volkert led with three assists.

The game was close at 24-22 after one quarter but MSUM hit a cold spell from the field in the second quarter. UMD outscored MSUM 14-3 in that frame to build a 38-25 halftime lead.  Hintz and Borowicz led MSUM with seven first-half points apiece.

A free throw by Hintz with 6:02 left in the third brought MSUM within 42-34 but the Bulldogs pushed the lead back to 14 by the end of the quarter thanks to a late three-pointer. The Dragons got no closer than 10 in the fourth quarter.

Redshirt freshman Peyton Boom had eight points and four rebounds off the bench for MSUM.

The Dragons play at St. Cloud State on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.

Steve d'Eustachio Stat of the Game: Tonight marks the third year in a row that Minnesota Duluth has ended a historic Dragon winning streak. The Bulldogs beat the Dragons on Jan. 20, 2017 in Moorhead to stop a 15-game streak and UMD halted the Dragons' 16-game unbeaten streak last year in Moorhead on Feb. 17.
