ST. CLOUD, Minn. — The 1-2 punch of guards
Jacky Volkert and
Kiley Borowicz combined for 51 points and 12 rebounds to help the No. 24 Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team earn a 82-75 road win over St. Cloud State in action Saturday in St. Cloud, Minn.
MSUM improved to 17-3 overall and 13-1 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with the win while St. Cloud State fell to 11-7 overall and 8-6 in the league. MSUM leads Minnesota Duluth and Concordia-St. Paul by two games in the NSIC title chase.
Volkert, a senior from Arden Hills, Minn., scored a career-high 27 points to go along with five rebounds and two assists. Borowicz had 24 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
Junior forward
Megan Hintz had 12 points and seven rebounds for the Dragons.
MSUM shot 49.2 percent (31-of-63) from the field, including 11-of-26 (42.3 percent) from three-point range. The Dragons had a 36-28 edge in rebounds.
The Dragons trailed 39-27 at one point in the first half but closed the half on a 12-2 run — keyed by two 3-pointers from Volkert, one apiece from junior forward
Madi Green and Borowicz — to cut the deficit to 41-39 at halftime.
MSUM carried that offensive momentum into the third quarter as the Dragons scored 28 points in that frame. Six different Dragons scored during the quarter, led by Borowicz with eight points, Hintz with seven and Volkert with six.
SCSU cut the lead to five in the fourth quarter bu MSUM responded with key buckets late, including a three by Volkert with 3:19 left to make it 79-66.
Freshman center
Nicole Brown added four points and four rebounds off the bench for MSUM.
The Dragons continue on the road next weekend when they play at Minnesota State, Mankato. Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. in Mankato, Minn.
