Dragon Volleyball Team Battles, Falls in 4 to No. 19 Upper Iowa

MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team battled No. 19 ranked Upper Iowa tough on Friday but fell in four sets to the Peacocks, losing, 25-19, 22-25, 25-16, 25-23 at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.

MSUM is now 8-10 overall and 3-7 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while Upper Iowa improved to 13-5 overall and 5-5 in the league.

Sophomore hitter Sarah Petrbok had 10 kills for MSUM while senior middle blocker Kaylyn Jenkins, sophomore hitter Amanda Carlson and freshman hitter Bridget Witzmann had eight apiece. Freshman Amber Bretwisch had 17 set assists while sophomore Katelyn Selensky had 16.

Petrbok led with 17 digs while Selensky had 15 and freshman Brooke Walthall 14. Jenkins had four block assists and a solo block.

After losing the first set MSUM battled back to win the second set.  The set was tied at 22-22 but Witzmann put down a kill to make it 23-22, and sophomore hitter Elise Bakke followed with a kill to make it 24-22. Carlson finished off the set win with an ace to help MSUM even the match at a set apiece.

Upper Iowa regained the momentum in the third set to win 25-16.  MSUM regrouped for the fourth set and held a 23-22 lead after a Jenkins kill. But the Peacocks scored the final three points to secure a 25-23 win and completing the win.

Freshman hitter Teeya Doppler had five kills and four block assists for MSUM.

The Dragons host No. 20 Winona State on Saturday for a 4 p.m. match.
