MOORHEAD, Minn. — A torrid shooting start to the game helped the No. 18 Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team roll to a 76-50 rout of Michigan Tech in Game 3 of the MSUM Classic on Saturday in Moorhead, Minn.
MSUM improved to 4-0 on the season while Michigan Tech fell to 1-3.
Senior forward
Megan Hintz was named the Classic MVP. In Saturday's win she had 20 points, 11 rebounds and a block. In Friday's win over Metro State she had 18 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard
Katie Tornstrom had 14 points and also earned all-classic honors after averaging 11 points per game.
Sophomore guard
Natalie Steichen had 11 points and four rebounds while junior guard
Sarah Jacobson had 10 points, three assists and seven rebounds.
MSUM shot 50.9 percent (27-of-53) from the field compared to 33.9 percent (19-of-56) for the Huskies.
The Dragons started out on fire from the field, hitting 7-of-9 three-pointers in the first quarter on their way to a 28-8 lead after the opening 10 minutes. Jacobson and Tornstrom were each 3-for-4 from three-point range in the opening quarter.
The lead grew to 47-22 by halftime. Hintz had 14 first-half points while Tornstrom had 11.
Sophomore forward
Peyton Boom had eight rebounds off the bench for MSUM.
The Dragons open Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play on Thursday at home against Northern State. Tipoff is 7 p.m. at Nemzek Fieldhouse.
