HONOLULU, Hawaii – The No. 11 Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team cut a 13-point deficit to two in the final minutes but came up short against No. 14 UC-San Diego on Friday, falling to the Tritons 60-54 at the Oahu Thanksgiving Classic in Honolulu.

MSUM fell to 6-2 on the year while UCSD improved to 5-1. The two losses at the classic this week for MSUM came by a combined eight points.

Senior forward Megan Hintz had a game-high 24 points for MSUM while adding eight rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Junior guard Sarah Jacobson had 14 points, seven rebounds and a team-best four assists. Senior forward Madi Green had nine rebounds.

MSUM held UCSD to 33.3 percent (22-of-66) shooting from the field but shot just 32.7 percent (18-of-55) from the field itself. UCSD had a slight 43-42 edge in rebounds.

The Dragons trailed 52-39 with 7:04 left but went on a 13-2 run over the next six minutes to cut the lead to 54-52.  Jacobson led the comeback with seven points while Hintz had four.  MSUM was within two with 24 seconds left but UCSD went 4-for-4 from the line in the final 22 seconds to ice the win.

MSUM was down by as many as 10 in the second quarter but fought back to within three by halftime at 32-29. MSUM went on a 15-8 run over the final 5:52 of the half, thanks to four points each from Hintz, Green and freshman Gabby Ritchie, to close the gap.  Hintz had 10 first-half points while Jacobson had seven.

A Hintz three-point play 1:36 into the second half put the Dragons up 35-34, but the Tritons ended the quarter on a 12-2 run to push the lead to 46-37 after 30 minutes.

The nonconference season is now over for MSUM, and the Dragons will turn their attention to the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference season, starting on Friday, Dec. 6 at home vs. Minnesota Crookston.
