BISMARCK, N.D.—Sophomore guard
Gavin Baumgartner's 22 points and go-ahead jumper with five seconds remaining gave the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team their first road win, a 79-78 win over Mary Friday night in Bismarck, N.D.
MSUM improves to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. UMary falls to 5-4 overall and 1-3 in the NSIC.
The Dragons shot 57.7 percent (30-of-52) and 46.7 percent (7-of-15) from beyond the arc compared to 50.8 percent (31-of-61) and 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from three for the Marauders.
Baumgartner led with 22 points on the night, along with five rebounds and two steals. Senior guard
Johnny Beeninga scored 13 for the Dragons and added five assists and three steals. Sophomore guard
Bryce Irsfeld also scored 13. Freshman forward
Dane Zimmer added 10 for MSUM.
Beeninga's 13 points puts him just 12 points away from hitting the 1,000-point mark in his career.
MSUM trailed 78-77 after a Jaylan White three-pointer with 19 seconds left. Bumgartner missed the jumper with nine seconds left but stole the ball from Mary and converted a layup with five seconds left to put the Dragons up by one.
UMary rushed to the other end in a hurry, and as White attempted to lay it in at the buzzer, Zimmer tracked him down from behind for the game-saving block.
The Marauders started the first half by jumping out to a 15-9 lead early in the game. An Irsfeld three-pointer gave the Dragons a 25-24 lead with 7:52 remaining in the first half. MSUM retained the lead to go into halftime up 39-36.
The game was close throughout with 15 lead changes and six ties. The biggest lead for either team was seven points by MSUM in the first half. Mary led by as many as six in the second half.
The Dragons look ahead to a matchup tomorrow night against Minot State at 5:30.
