Dragon Softball Falls to Beavers and Marauders at Minot Dome Tournament

MINOT, N.D. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team lost a pair of non conference games on Friday at the Minot State Dome Tournament. The Dragons lost to Minot State, 8-0 and then fell to UMary, 8-6.

Against Minot, freshman right fielder Shay Weber was 2-for-2 while junior designated hitter Payton Gaber and junior third baseman Emma Dummer were each 1-for-2.

Sophomore pitcher Becky Berth took the loss, going 4.2 innings and giving up eight runs, seven earned.

MSUM's best threat came in the fourth when Gaber and Dummer hit back-to-back singles with one out. However the Dragons left both runners stranded as a groundout and fly out ended the inning.

Against UMary, Dummer was 2-for-4 with a double and RBI. Berth was 2-for-2 with a double and RBI while senior shortstop Taylor Roddie was 1-for-2 with a two-run homer. Gaber, Weber and sophomore center fielder Elizabeth Johnson had hits for MSUM.

Gaber took the loss, giving up three earned runs. Freshman Anna Lang gave up five runs, three earned, in 1.2 innings while Berth pitched 5.1 scoreless innings, striking out five.

MSUM was down 8-0 after the top of the second but chipped away at the lead.  In the second Berth hit an RBI double to score freshman Kaiya Sundeen, who had walked earlier in the inning. In the third, Weber hit an RBI single to score Dummer to cut the lead to 8-2.

The Dragons put together a four-run sixth inning. Sundeen walked and scored on Roddie's two-run homer to cut the lead to 8-4. Dummer added an RBI single in the sixth and later in the inning Johnson scored on a wild pitch.

MSUM will face Minnesota Crookston at noon on Saturday and Valley City State at 2 p.m. to wrap up the weekend.
