SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team earned a come-from-behind 72-67 win over Winona State University in the quarterfinal of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health Tournament on Saturday. Today's win was the 25th of the season which is a new single-season MSUM record.

MSUM is now 25-5 overall while Winona State falls to 15-13 overall.

Senior guard Jacky Volkert had nine assists and became the all-time assists leader at MSUM with 496 for her career. Volkert had 10 points, four steals, and six rebounds. Sophomore guard Brookyln Liegel had a career-high 16 points and was 4-of-6 from the three-point line. Sophomore guard Kylie Borowicz and junior forward Madi Green each had 12 points, while junior forward Megan Hintz recorded 13 points, four assists, and four rebounds.

The Dragons shot 46.6 percent (27-of-58) from the field compared to 42.6 percent (26-of-61) for the Warriors. Each team had 34 rebounds and MSUM had seven steals compared to two for WSU.

The Dragons had an 8-6 lead with 7:04 remaining in the first quarter after a layup from Green. The score remaining tight as Liegel would put MSUM up 17-15 with just over two minutes to go in the quarter. The Warriors pushed out four late points to hold a 19-17 lead at the end of the quarter.

The second quarter opened with a defensive battle as neither team would score until the Warriors hit a layup to go up 21-17 with 7:06 on the clock. Borowicz hit a three as the Dragons closed the gap, trailing 23-22 with 5:30 remaining in the quarter. Freshman guard Nicole Herbranson tied the game 26-26 after a layup, but the Warriors responded with a seven-point run to go up 33-26 with under two minutes to go in the quarter. MSUM would go into the break trailing 36-31.

The Dragons opened the third quarter with a three-pointer from Hintz to trail 36-34 before a layup from Borowicz tied things up with 8:16 to go in the quarter. WSU would go on a 10-2 run before a three from Liegel cut the Warrior lead to 48-43. Neither team would score through the final minute of the third quarter as the Dragons would trail 53-45 going into the final quarter.

Winona State would lead 58-47 with just over six minutes remaining in the game before two free-throws and a three-pointer from Liegel brought MSUM back into striking distance. The Dragons would hit four three-pointers in the final five minutes to go up 66-64 with :49 on the clock. MSUM was 6-of-6 in free-throws down the stretch and earned the 72-67 win.

MSUM will play on Monday at 12 p.m. in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/ Sanford Health Tournament Semifinal against the winner of the Wayne State/Sioux Falls Quarterfinal matchup.

It was also the Dragons' second win (against four losses) in the quarterfinals since the league went to a 16-team tournament in 2013. The other victory was a 93-84 win over Winona St. in Sioux Falls on Feb. 28, 2015, behind Heather Strese's career-high 36 points.
