MSUM Softball Tops USciences and Alderson Broaddus, Ends Florida Trip on 4-Game Win Streak

CLERMONT, Fla. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team wrapped up its Florida trip with a pair of non conference wins on Friday, beating University of the Sciences 5-2 and rallying for an 8-7 win over Alderson Broaddus.

MSUM (6-11) is now on a four-game winning streak and finished its Florida trip with a 6-3 record.

"It was great to see us pull together two straight days of strong softball," MSUM head coach Amanda Reckamp said. "Our offense fought back again today, especially through some adversity in the second game."

Redshirt freshman Samantha Gjerde was 3-for-3 with to RBI while freshman infielder Kaiya Sundeen was 1-for-2 with two RBI. Sophomore first baseman Ashley McCance had an RBI on a squeeze bunt. Junior designated hitter Payton Gaber added a double and a run scored.

Sophomore Becky Berth picked up the win, going seven innings and allowing just one earned run. She struck out three.

A four-run first inning was the key for MSUM, highlighted by a two-run double from Sundeen, Sophomore center fielder Elizabeth Johnson walked and one out later Gaber doubled to move Johnson to third.  McCance's squeeze bunt scored Johnson, and Gjerde followed with an RBI single to score Gaber. One out later, Sundeen ripped a two-run, two-out double to make it 4-0.

Gjerde's RBI single in the third made it 5-1. USciences scored an unearned run in the fourth but Berth kept them off the board the rest of the way.

Junior third baseman Emma Dummer had a huge game against Alderson Broaddus, going 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and four RBI. Johnson was 2-for-4 with three runs scored. Berth was 1-for-2 with a double and RBI while McCance and freshman infielder Ally Helgoe were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman Jordey Smith was 1-for-1 while Sundeen added an RBI.

Freshman Anna Lang started and gave up five earned runs in three innings. Berth picked up the win in relief, giving up one earned run in 3.2 innings.

Dummer hit a two-run homer —her first of the season — to put MSUM ahead 2-0 in the first. AB scored the next six runs to take a 6-2 lead after three innings.

Helgoe hit an RBI single in the fourth to score McCance, who reached on an error to lead off the inning.  In the fifth, senior infielder Taylor Roddie walked and moved to third on Johnson's bunt single.  Dummer ripped a single to make it 6-4, and Berth followed with a double to make it 6-5. Sundeen added a sacrifice fly later in the inning to score Berth, tying the game at 6-6.

Johnson started the rally in the sixth with a one-out double. Dummer followed with a double to score Johnson, and one out later, McCance singled to score Dummer to make it 8-6.

AB hit a homer in the sixth to cut the Dragon lead to 8-7, but Berth sent down the side in order to preserve the win.

"I'm proud of our week here in Florida. We found ways to get better and to battle through," Reckamp said. "We had a lot of people step up and find spots to come up big for us. We are starting to develop that next-person-up mentality and having players step in when we need it."

MSUM's next scheduled action is a non conference home doubleheader against Jamestown on March 24.
