MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team fell to Southwest Minnesota State, 7-0 and 12-1 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Monday in Moorhead, Minn. SMSU hit five home runs, including two grand slams, in the twinbill.
MSUM fell to 11-24 overall and 5-13 in the league while MSUM improved to 13-17 overall and 8-10 inh the league.
In the opener, senior shortstop
Taylor Roddie was 3-for-3 while junior designated hitter
Ashley McCance had a double for the Dragons.
Sophomore pitcher
Becky Berth took the loss, giving up seven earned runs in six innings.
The Mustangs hit three homers – a three-run shot in the first, a solo in the fourth and a two-run shot in the fifth – to build their lead.
In the second game, junior third baseman
Emma Dummer was 2-for-3 with a homer and a run scored. McCance was 1-for-3 while freshman second baseman
Ally Helgoe was 1-for-2.
Dummer's solo homer in the top of the first gave MSUM a 1-0 lead but the Mustangs would score 12 unanswered runs to secure the win, highlighted by grand slams in the fourth and fifth innings.
Freshman
Anna Lang took the loss, giving up nine earned runs and seven walks in 4.2 innings. Berth allowed one run.
MSUM hosts UMary at 2 p.m. on Tuesday.
