MOORHEAD, Minn. – On a day when the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team broke a single-season record for doubles, the Dragons split with Wayne State, winning 11-3 in Game 1 before falling 11-8 in Game 2.
Senior
Taylor Roddie's double in the second inning was the 71st of the year for MSUM, setting a new single-season school record. MSUM added to that total and now has 75 through 39 games.
The Dragons are 13-26 overall and 7-15 in the NSIC while Wayne State is 11-28 overall and 2-20 in the league.
MSUM smacked out 12 hits in the opener with six going for extra bases. Freshman catcher
Jordie McNeilly was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI while junior DH/first baseman
Payton Gaber was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI. Sophomore center fielder
Elizabeth Johnson was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Junior third baseman
Emma Dummer hit her team-best seventh homer of the year and scored three runs. Roddie and freshman outfielders
Kaiya Sundeen and
Shay Weber each had a double and an RBI. Sophomore first baseman
Ashley McCance and freshman second baseman
Ally Helgoe added hits.Every Dragon starter had at least one hit.
Berth got the win, giving up three earned runs in five innings. She struck out six.
Dummer's solo homer gave MSUM a 1-0 lead in the first, but Wayne State answered to make it 1-1. MSUM broke the game open in the second with six runs off of seven hits. Sundeen, Weber and Roddie each had RBI doubles while McNeilly delivered a 2-run double later in the inning. Gaber added an RBI single later in the inning.
The Dragons added three more runs in the third, two coming from a double from Gabe and another scoring on an error.
Johnson's RBI single in the fifth helped MSUM win by the eight-run rule.
In Game 2, MSUM scored eight runs had 11 hits but three home runs by the Wildcats proved to be the difference.
Johnson had another big game going 2-for-4 with four RBI and a double. McCance was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a double. Roddie and Weber were each 2-for-3 while and Gaber added hits.
MSUM was down 3-0 after the top of the first but a two-run double by Johnson in the bottom of the first, which scored Dummer and Roddie, made it 3-2.
The Dragons took an 8-5 lead in the second with six runs, taking advantage of a pair of WSC errors. McCance hit a two-run double and Johnson added a two-run single to spark the rally.
MSUM would not score again as the Wildcats scored the final six runs of the game to take the 11-8 win. Berth took the loss, giving up six earned runs in five innings of relief. Freshman
Anna Lang started and gave up five runs, three earned, in two innings.
MSUM hosts No. 17 Augustana at noon on Saturday. Seniors
