Dragon Softball Swept in Finale by Mavericks Despite Big Day from Roddie

MANKATO, Minn. — Despite a big day at the plate from senior shortstop Taylor Roddie, the Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team was swept by Minnesota State, Mankato on Sunday, falling 9-1 and losing a 3-2 heartbreaker in Game 2.

The Dragons finished the season 13-34 overall and 7-23 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. MSU improved to 35-17 overall and 20-10 in the league.

"We took our lumps this season but I believe we worked towards what it takes to compete in the NSIC," MSUM head coach Amanda Reckamp said. "We own the growth we had this season and now it is on all of us to push it ever further. I'm proud of what Team 45 did to make the future Team 46 that much better. I'm fired up to continue leading MSUM softball as we move towards new goals."

Roddie finished her final doubleheader going 4-for-7 with a homer, an RBI and two runs scored.

Roddie led off Game 1 with the solo homer — her fifth of the year — which was MSUM's only run and hit of the game. The Mavericks scored nine unanswered runs to secure the win.

Freshman Anna Lang took the loss for MSUM, giving up nine runs, seven earned, in 5.2 innings. She walked six and struck out two.

Roddie and junior first baseman Payton Gaber were each 3-for-4 with a run scored in Game 2. Roddie added a stolen base. Freshman outfielder Shay Weber had a double while sophomore outfielder Elizabeth Johnson had a hit and an RBI. Redshirt freshman Samantha Gjerde and freshman infielder Kaiya Sundeen added hits.

Sophomore Becky Berth took the loss, giving up three runs, two earned, in 6.1 innings. She struck out two and walked none.

MSUM outhit the Mavericks 10-6. The Dragons rallied with two runs in the sixth after trailing 2-0 as Gaber and Johnson hit RBI singles. They had the bases loaded with one out but a pair of strikeouts ended the threat. In the seventh MSUM had two runners on but was unable to get the go-ahead run across.

"I'm proud of our fight in the last game. Taylor Roddie put up a good last day of her career," Reckamp said.

The Dragons will say goodbye to two seniors, Roddie and Lexie Kennedy.
