Dragon Women Open New Year by Hosting Winona State and Upper Iowa

The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team opens the new calendar year with a pair of home games this weekend. MSUM hosts Winona State at 5:30 p.m. on Friday and then hosts Upper Iowa at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The Dragons are 10-3 overall and 5-1 in the NSIC after rolling to a 77-58 win over Northern State on Dec. 21. Sarah Jacobson had 18 points for MSUM.

The Dragons will meet Winona State for an 80th time and lead the series 50-29.  MSUM won both meetings in 2018-19, including a comeback win in the NSIC tournament.  The Dragons have never lost to Upper Iowa and hold a 23-0 series lead.

Including Jacobson's 18 points, MSUM had four players in double figures at Northern, as senior Megan Hintz, junior Brooklyn Liegel and sophomore Peyton Boom each had 11 points.

Senior forward Megan Hintz leads MSUM at 16.2 points and 7.9 rebounds per game while Jacobson averages 9.9 points, 3.5 assists and 6.2 rebounds per game. Senior forward Madi Green averages 8.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. MSUM has six players averaged 7.1 points per game or more.

MSUM is outrebounding its opponents 44.9-30.5 and outscoring its foes 72.6-56.5.

Karla Nelson is in her 20th season as the MSUM head coach with a record of 362-198 at the school.

About Winona State
The Warriors are 8-2 overall and 4-2 in the NSIC after beating Upper Iowa 79-60 on Dec. 21.

Five Warriors average in double figures, led by Taylor Hustad at 13.3 points and 10.0 rebounds per game. Allie Pickrain averages 11.5 points per game, while Caitlin Riley (11.1), Emily Kieck (10.4) and Sydney Lodermeier (10.3) all average in double figures. Kieck leads at 4.3 assists per game.

Winona State scores 77.0 points per game and allows 68.2.

Scott Ballard is in his 16th season as the Winona State head coach with a record of 272-179.

About Upper Iowa
The Peacocks are 2-10 overall and 1-5 in the NSIC under first-year Head Coach Nate Oakland. They ended a 49-game NSIC losing streak with a 65-63 win over Concordia-St. Paul on Dec. 13.

Freshman Jessica Musgrave leads UIU at 15.8 points and 6.2 rebounds per game per game. Megan Peterson averages 9.1 points and 2.3 assists per game.

Upper Iowa scores 57.8 points per game and allows 69.8. The Peacocks are being outrebounded 41.2-36.0.
