MOORHEAD, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team suffered its first home loss of the 2019-20 season with a tough 65-63 overtime defeat at the hands of Winona State on Friday night at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead, Minn.
MSUM fell to 10-4 overall and 5-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with the loss while Winona State improved to 9-2 overall and 5-2 in the league.
Senior forward
Megan Hintz had 14 points and four rebounds for MSUM while sophomore forward
Peyton Boom had 13 points in 23 minutes off of the bench. Junior guard
Sarah Jacobson had 12 points and seven rebounds while sophomore guard
Natalie Steichen had nine points, six assists and a game-high five steals.
MSUM shot 40 percent (20-of-50) for the game but was just 7-of-26 (26.9 percent) from three-point range. The Dragons committed 22 turnovers which led to 22 points for the Warriors.
MSUM led by as many as 10 in the fourth quarter and held a 53-44 lead with 3:10 left after senior forward
Madi Green drained a three. But the Dragons would not score again in regulation as the Warriors scored the final nine points to send the game to overtime with 53-53 score.
The Warriors scored the first five points of overtime to take a 58-53 lead and MSUM got as close as one on three occasions but could not take the lead. The Dragons had a chance to tie it from three with 21 seconds left but the shot didn't drop. MSUM was down 65-63 in the final seconds but threw the ball away on a turnover and Winona State held on.
The Dragons were down by as many as eight in the first half but battled back to take a 29-28 halftime lead. Hintz and Jacobson had seven first-half points each for MSUM while Steichen had six.
MSUM extended the lead to eight (41-33) after three quarters after outscoring the Warriors 12-5 in the third quarter. Freshman guard
Katie Tornstrom hit a pair of free throws to push the lead to 47-37 with 7:52 left which was the largest Dragon lead of the night.
MSUM hosts Upper Iowa at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday to conclude the weekend.
