Balance Propels Dragon Men Past St. Cloud State, 74-63

ST. CLOUD, MINN.—A well-rounded scoring effort by the Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team helped the Dragons take down St. Cloud State 74-63 on Friday night. Five players scored in double figures for MSUM.

MSUM improves to 17-9 overall and 13-7 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Huskies fall to 13-12 overall and 10-9 in the NSIC.

The Dragons shot 45.8 percent (27-of-59) from the field and 41.7 percent (5-of-12) from beyond the arc compared to 34.9 percent (22-of-63) from the field and 32.3 percent (10-of-31) from three.

Sophomore guard Bryce Irsfeld led the Dragons with 15 points. Irsfeld also added six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Junior forward Kaedrick Williams scored 14 for the Dragons, while also grabbing five rebounds and adding three steals. Sophomore guard Gavin Baumgartner scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and dished out a team-high five assists. Dane Zimmer scored 10 points and led the Dragons on the glass with nine rebounds. Senior guard Johnny Beeninga finished with 12 points.

In the first half, the Dragons took control early. With 8:19 remaining in the half, the Dragons held a 10-point lead, which was their largest of the half. A St. Cloud three-pointer with 2:40 remaining cut the Dragon lead to just one at 29-28. The Dragons held on and went into the half up 34-28.

In the second half, MSUM opened by extending their lead. With 13:56 remaining, an Irsfeld layup capped off a 9-0 run, giving the Dragons a 47-35 lead. St. Cloud fought back to close the lead and found themselves down 59-56 with just 3:21 remaining in the game. The Dragons held on to the lead, and a layup by Zimmer with 1:56 remaining gave MSUM a 66-58 lead. A pair of Irsfeld free throws with 0:29 remaining gave the Dragons their largest lead of the game at 72-60. The Dragons would go on to win the game 74-63.

MSUM is back in action again on Saturday. The Dragons will play Minnesota Duluth on the road, with tip-off scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
