MARSHALL, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team cut a 10-point deficit to one in the fourth quarter but the rally fell short in a 66-61 loss to Southwest Minnesota State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday night in Marshall, Minn.
MSUM fell to 16-8 overall and 9-6 in the NSIC while SMSU improved to 12-10 overall and 7-10 in the league. The loss ended a nine-game winning streak vs. SMSU for the Dragons dating back to 2013.
Senior forward
Megan Hintz led MSUM with 16 points while sophomore guard
Natalie Steichen had 13 points, three steals and three assists. Senior forward
Madi Green had 10 points and nine rebounds off the bench.
The Dragons were down 51-41 with 1:14 left in the third quarter but scored the next six points, capped off by a Hintz basket, to cut the lead to 51-47 with 7:41 left in the game.
Hintz hit a three-pointer with 5:45 left to bring MSUM within 53-52, the closest the Dragons had been since the first half. On the ensuing possession SMSU's Jenna Borchers hit a three to answer and put the Mustangs back up by four.
A layup by Steichen brought MSUM within 60-58 with 1:06 left. The Dragons had a chance to tie but junior guard
Sarah Jacobson hit 1-of-2 free throws to cut the lead to 60-59. Borchers hit 1-of-2 foul shots for SMSU, but after missing the second, the Mustangs got the offensive rebound and converted two free throws to make it 63-59.
Steichen scored again to make it 63-61 and after Borchers hit 1-of-2 free throws, the Dragons had a chance to tie with a three but the shot didn't fall. SMSU hit two foul shots to make it 66-61 with 11 seconds left and the Dragons weren't able to get closer despite a pair of three-point attempts.
MSUM led 22-21 in the second quarter after a Green basket but SMSU took the lead and led 32-25 at halftime.
Sophomore guard
Nicole Herbranson had eight points for MSUM. Jacobson had three assists.
MSUM plays at No. 13 Sioux Falls at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday to cap off the weekend.
