St. Louis, Mo. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team was swept by Maryville in a doubleheader on Sunday, falling by scores of 5-0 and 11-2 (6 innings).
MSUM fell to 0-4 on the year while Maryville improved to 8-8.
"It was tough going this weekend but the high points were what we need to build on," MSUM head coach
Amanda Reckamp said. "We saw some really good outfield defense and some glimpses of the power potential we have throughout the lineup. As we head into spring break we look to stabilize the lineup and continue to have people step up to perform in their roles."
In the opener, MSUM managed two hits — singles by senior third baseman
Emma Dummer and senior first baseman
Payton Gaber — and were unable to break through against Callans, who fired a two-hit shutout while striking out six.
Junior
Becky Berth took the loss for MSUM, giving up five earned runs — all coming in the decisive third inning. She walked two and struck out none.
In Game 2, Dummer had an RBI for MSUM while sophomore catcher
Jordie McNeilly and sophomore right fielder
Jordey Smith had hits.
Freshman
Abby Muelrath took the loss, giving up six runs, three earned. She was not credited with an out. Freshman
Kiley Washnieski gave up one earned run in one inning. Sophomore
Anna Lang pitched well in relief, giving up one earned run in 4.1 innings. Berth surrendered two unearned runs in relief.
MSUM struggled in the field, committing five errors which led to six unearned runs for Maryville.
The Dragons faced an 8-0 hole after one inning but were able to cut into the gap in the third, thanks to Dummer's RBI and an error. Maryville put the game away in the sixth.
The Dragons now turn their focus to their annual Florida trip. They will open with games on March 7 vs. Lewis and California (Pa.).
