MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team saw its two-match winning streak end with a 25-19, 26-24, 25-16 loss to Minnesota Duluth in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead.
MSUM fell to 3-9 in the NSIC while UMD improved to 6-6 in the league.
Junior outside hitters
Bridget Witzmann and
Amanda Carlson led MSUM with eight kills each. Freshman middle blocker
Abby Thompson has four kills and also added three solo blocks and two assists.
Freshman setter
Kelly Klees had 19 set assists and a team-best 12 digs for the Dragons. Senior libero
Sarah Petrbok added 11 digs while Carlson had nine and freshman defensive specialist
Jordan Hein had eight. Hein and sophomore defensive specialist
Brooke Walthall had two service aces each.
UMD led the first set almost the whole way on its way to a 25-19 win.
In the second set MSUM was up 8-7 but scored three in a row, which included kills from Witzmann and Walthall, to push the lead to 11-7.
The Bulldogs rallied back to take a 15-14 lead and from there, the set – which featured 12 ties and eight lead changes – was close. A kill by Carlson gave MSUM a 24-22 lead and the Dragons served for match point – but UMD scored the final four points of the set to record a 26-24 win.
MSUM was within 9-7 in the third set after a kill from Witzmann but the Bulldogs took control after that, scoring the next five points to pull out to a 14-7 lead on their way to a 25-16 win.
The Dragons host No. 13 St. Cloud State at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday.
