MOORHEAD. Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team was swept by Northern State on Thursday, falling 25-20, 25-9, 25-18 at Nemzek Fieldhouse in Moorhead.
 
MSUM fell to 3-11 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference while Northern State improved to 8-6 in league play.
 
Junior outside hitter 
Amanda Carlson had 12 kills for MSUM while junior middle blocker 
Elise Bakke and junior outside hitter 
Bridget Witzmann had seven apiece. Freshman middle blocker 
Abby Thompson added six.
 
Freshman setter 
Kelly Klees had 30 assists while Thompson and freshman right-side hitter 
Lexi Pew had one block assist each.
 
Senior libero 
Sarah Petrbok had 10 digs while freshman defensive specialist 
Jordan Hein had nine.
 
Northern State hit .407 for the match compared to .165 for MSUM.
 
The Dragons were down 13-11 in the opening set but scored five points in a row, which included three kills from Bakke, to surge into a 16-13 lead.
 
The set was tied at 18-18 but the Wolves scored seven of the final eight points to win 25-19. Northern carried that momentum into a dominant 25=9 win in the second set.
 
The Dragons were down 14-8 in the third set but cut the lead to 18-16 with a 4-0 run. They got no closer and fell 25-18.
 
MSUM will play its next four matches on the road, starting Saturday at UMary for a 6 p.m. match.
