The Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team opens the 2021-22 season on the road for the Regional Challenge in Missouri.
The Dragons will face Rogers State on Friday at 8:30 p.m. and follow with No. 6 Central Missouri on Saturday at 6:30 p.m. both games will be in Warrensburg, Mo.
The Dragons return many of their players from the 2020-21 season, including scoring leader junior forward Peyton Boom at 14 points per game. Boom was All-NSIC North First Team last season and was listed as MSUM's NSIC Preseason Player to Watch.
Boom also led the team in rebounds per game with 6.1. Also returning is junior guard Natalie Steichen who led the team in assists with 2.9 and steals with 1.4.
Sophomore guard Mariah McKeever is another returning starter who averaged 11.3 points per game.
Karla Nelson is in her 22nd season as head coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead with a record of 376-214. The Dragons have never had a losing season in Nelson's tenure.
About Rogers State
The Hillcats, who were picked to finish 12th in the MIAA preseason coaches poll, are 0-0 on the season but lost two exhibition games to Division I foes Oklahoma University and Oral Roberts University. Juniors Maisie Schroeder, Julie Luna, Jordan Lewis, and Katrina Christian return to lead the team. Kyle Bent is in his fourth season as head coach at Rogers State University with a record of 24-54.
About No. 6 Central Missouri
The No. 6 Jennies are 1-2 on the season after losses to Southwestern Oklahoma State and Drury; and a victory over West Texas A&M. Freshman Olivia Nelson and senior Nija Collier lead the team in points per game with 17.7 while Brooke Littrell averages 16.7 points per game. Collier also leads the team in rebounds per game with 13. Dave Slifer is in his 18th season as head coach at Central Missouri with a record of 358-159 at the school.
