Dragon Men Fall in Double OT at Oklahoma Baptist, 90-87

SHAWNEE, Okla. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team lost a double-overtime marathon to Oklahoma Baptist on Saturday, falling 90-87 at the GAC/NSIC Challenge in Shawnee, Okla.
 
MSUM fell to 2-3 while Oklahoma Baptist improved to 2-0. Both teams were in the NCAA tournament last season and are receiving votes in the NABC Preseason Coaches Poll. Both teams are also preseason coaches' favorites in their respective conferences.
 
Sophomore forward Dane Zimmer had 21 points and 15 rebounds. He finished 10-of-14 from the field and recorded seven offensive boards.
 
Junior guard Gavin Baumgartner had 20 points and four assists while junior guard Bryce Irsfeld had 16 points and four assists. Freshman guard Jacob Beeninga had 16 points, a team-high five steals and three assists.
 
Junior guard Lorenzo McGhee added eight rebounds for MSUM.
 
Oklahoma Baptist led 66-60 with 46 seconds left in regulation afte a Bryce Putnam three-pointer. Beeninga answered with a three-pointer seconds later to cut the lead in half. OBU turned the ball over and Baumgartner hit 1-of-2 free throws. After recording a pair of offensive boards, Zimmer's putback tied the game with three seconds left, sending the game to overtime.
 
In the overtime, Oklahoma Baptist led 78-75, but Baumgartner drained a three-pointer with seven seconds left to tie the game, sending the contest to a second overtime.
 
MSUM had a chance to tie once again at the end of the second overtime but the shot wouldn't fall and the Dragons fell three points short.
 
The Dragons host Crown College at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in nonconference action.
