The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team, which completed nonconference play last weekend, returns to Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play this week.
The Dragons will compete at UMary on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. in Bismarck, N.D. The Dragons will then return to Nemzek Fieldhouse to compete against Minot State on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
The Dragons are 6-4 on the season and 1-0 in the NSIC. They beat Northern State, 75-65 and Winona State, 76-67 before losing to Sioux Falls, 80-76.
MSUM leads the series with UMary 19-16 after sweeping the Marauders last season. The Dragons lead the all-time series with Minot State 31-11; the two teams did not meet a year ago as the games were cancelled because of Covid protocols.
Junior guard Lorenzo McGhee leads the team in points per game with 11.4, followed closely by sophomore Dane Zimmer with 11.2 and junior Gavin Baumgartner with 11.0 points per game. Junior guard Bryce Irsfeld (10.8 ppg) and freshman guard Jacob Beeninga (10.5 ppg) also average in double figures.
Zimmer also leads the team in rebounds per game with 8.8, while Baumgartner leads the team in assists per game with 3.4.
Chad Walthall is in his 12th season as head coach at Minnesota State University Moorhead with a record of 227-112.

The Marauders are 2-4 on the season and 1-0 in the NSIC after defeating Sioux Falls and losing to Winona State last week. Junior Kai Huntsberry leads the team in points per game with 20.8. Kai Huntsberry also leads the team in steals per game with 1.5. Junior Kam Warrens leads the team in rebounds per with 6.8, followed closely by Huntsberry with 6.0. Jack Nelson is in his first season as head coach at UMary.
About Minot State
The Beavers are 6-1 on the season and 0-1 in the NSIC after defeating Valley City State University and losing to UMary last week. Senior Cam'ron Dunfee leads the team in points per game with 16.1, followed by Senior Melvin Newbern with 15.0 points per game. Melvin Newbern also leads the team in rebounds per game with 10.3. Senior Max Cody leads the team in assists per game with 8.4. Matt Murken is in his 10th season as head coach at Minot State.
