The Minnesota State University Moorhead men's basketball team opens the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference/Sanford Health Tournament on Friday against Minnesota State-Mankato. Game time is 7 p.m. at the Sanford Pentagon in Sioux Falls, S.D.

MSUM is 9-3 overall while Minnesota State is 10-6.

THE SERIES

MSUM and Minnesota State will meet for a 101st time with the Mavericks leading the series 66-34.  The Dragons dominated the last meeting on Jan. 31, 2020 in Moorhead by an 88-63 score thanks to 23 points from guard Gavin Baumgartner.

ABOUT MSUM...

The Dragons wrapped up the regular season with a split at No. 2 Northern State. The Wolves won the opening night 90-83 while the Dragons won the second game 93-86.  MSUM's win on Saturday ended a 25-game winning streak for the Wolves. 

MSUM is led in scoring by junior guard Lorenzo McGhee was 14.1 points per game while junior guard Bryce Irsfeld averages 12.6. 

Junior guard Gavin Baumgartner and sophomore forward Dane Zimmer each average 12.3 while senior Gatdoar Kueth averages 10.5 points per game.  Zimmer leads at 5.4 rebounds per game. Irsfeld leads at 3.3 assists per game. 

MSUM scores 84.4 points per game while allowing 73.5. The Dragons are shooting 49 percent from the field, including 40.4 percent from three-point range.

Chad Walthall is in his 11th season as the MSUM head coach with a record of 218-105. 

SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION…

MINNESOTA STATE

The Mavericks swept Concordia-St. Paul to conclude the regular season. 

Minnesota State has four players in double figures: Quincy Anderson (17.4), Devonte Thedford (14.1), Malik Willingham (11.4) and Ryland Holt (11.3). Kelby Kramer leads at 6.4 rebounds per game while Thedford averages 3.7 assists per game.

The Mavericks average 79.8 points per game. 

Matt Margenthaler is in his 20th season at MSU with a record of 420-186.
