ABERDEEN, S.D. – An 18-0 run in the fourth quarter helped the Minnesota State University Moorhead women's basketball team pull away in a 67-50 win over Northern State in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Sunday in Aberdeen, S.D.
MSUM, which avenged an earlier loss to the Wolves, improved to 5-7 overall and 4-4 in the NSIC with the win while Northern State fell to 6-7 overall and 3-5 in the league.
Junior forward
Peyton Boom had 23 points and a team-best four steals for MSUM while freshman guard
Natalie Jens had 13 points. Freshman forward
Paige Thompson had 12 points and eight rebounds.
Junior guard
Natalie Steichen had eight rebounds, seven assists and five points for MSUM.
The Dragons shot 36.4 percent (24-of-66) for the game while the Wolves hit 41.3 percent (19-of-46). MSUM had a slight 32-30 edge in rebounds.
The Wolves crept to within 47-42 early in the fourth quarter before the Dragons went on the decisive 18-0 run. Thompson scored seven points during that run while Boom had four. The Dragons held Northern without a point for more than six minutes in the fourth quarter.
The Dragons led much of the way, including 31-23 at halftime. MSUM forced 11 Wolves turnovers in the first half and held them to 34.6 percent (9-of-26) shooting. The Dragons committed one turnover themselves.
Boom had 15 first-half points on 6-of-10 shooting.
Senior guard
Nicole Herbranson hit a pair of crucial 3-pointers off the bench, on her way to six points.
MSUM is at Augustana on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game in Sioux Falls, S.D.
