MARSHALL, Minn. — The Minnesota State University Moorhead volleyball team was swept by No. 7 Southwest Minnesota State, 25-15, 27-25, 25-10 in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Friday in Marshall, Minn.
MSUM is now 5-15 overall and 2-10 in the NSIC while SMSU improved to 18-2 overall and 10-2 in the league.
Sophomore hitter Abby Thompson had a season-high nine kills for MSUM while junior outside hitter Bridget Witzmann had seven.
Freshman setter Emily Skalicky had 25 set assists and six digs while freshman libero Macie Wieman had 12 digs. Senior middle blocker Elise Bakke had three block assists and a solo block.
SMSU hit .330 for the match compared to .129 for the Dragons.
The Mustangs dominated the first and third sets but the Dragons battled tough in the second set. MSUM took a 6-2 lead in the set with a 3-point spurt which included a kill from Abby Thompson and blocks from Witzmann and Bakke.
SMSU closed the gap and the set went back-and-forth from there. A Bakke kill gave MSUM a set point at 24-23 but SMSU tied at 24-24. A kill from Witzmann put MSUM up 25-24 but the Mustangs scored the final three points to take a 27-25 win.
MSUM caps off the weekend Saturday at Sioux Falls.
