Dragons Own the Paint in Win Over Golden Eagles

MOORHEAD, Minn. -- In their second game in as many days, the MSUM women's basketball team scored 44 points in the paint en route to a 71-50 win over Minnesota Crookston Saturday.

The Dragons would start the game on a 13-5 run in the first quarter behind an aggressive defensive effort. Peyton Boom would notch a three-pointer to push the MSUM lead to double figures early. Minnesota Crookston would cut that lead slightly before the first quarter ended, but the Dragons still held a 16-9 lead after one.

Mariah McKeever would go on an individual 5-0 run early in the second frame. A long three-pointer from the junior put the Dragons up 25-11. MSUM would continue to stave off Crookston runs as the second quarter progressed. McKeever led the way with 11 first half points while Peyton Boom chipped in nine points. At half, the Dragons led 33-20, shooting 41.2 percent from the field.

MSUM would open up a 20-point lead in the third quarter as the Golden Eagles employed a zone defense to try and throw the Dragon offense off. It proved to be unsuccessful with Boom scoring six points to go along with a pair of threes from Natalie Jens and Olivia Skibiel

The Dragons would hold their lead through the fourth quarter. By game's end, MSUM had scored 44 points in the paint compared to Crookston's 22. MSUM would also outrebound the Golden Eagles 43-32 in a 71-50 victory.
