MOORHEAD, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team split a nonconference doubleheader with Mayville State on Thursday. The Dragons won Game 1 by a 5-4 margin but lost Game 2 by a 9-7 score.
MSUM is now 3-13 on the year while Mayville State is 3-12.
Freshman second baseman
Hannah Losee was 1-for-3 with two RBI for MSUM while freshman right fielder
Eliyah McCarthy was 1-for-2 with an RBI and a double. Freshman outfielder
Avery Steffen was 1-for-2 with a run scored while senior center fielder
Shay Weber and freshman
Ella Holiman scored runs.
Senior pitcher
Anna Lang picked up the win, giving up four earned runs in seven innings. She struck out a season-high six. She pitched 6 1/3 scoreless innings before surrendering a pair of two-run homers in the seventh.
MSUM scored in the first as Weber scored on an error on a grounder by senior first baseman
Jordey Smith.
The lead grew to 3-0 in the fourth, thanks to a two-run single from Losee. A Mayville State error to lead off the inning led to a run.
In the sixth, the Dragon lead grew. McCarthy's RBI double scored Steffen, who had singled to lead off the inning.
Mayville State made a comeback in the seventh with a pair of two-run homers with one out. But Lang settled down and got the final two outs to preserve the win.
In Game 2, Steffen had a huge game, going 2-for-4 with six RBI and a pair of home runs. Weber was 2-for-3 while Smith was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Losee, McCarthy, sophomore pitcher

Annika Norman had hits for the Dragons.
Evans took the loss, giving up five runs, four earned, in four innings. Steffen gave up four earned runs in two-plus innings.
Steffen's first three-run homer pushed MSUM in front 3-0 in the first. Mayville came back with a two-run bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 3-2.
Steffen followed with her second three-run blast in the third to make it 6-2. The Dragons held a 7-3 lead going into the bottom of the sixth before Mayville rallied with six unanswered runs to rally for the win.
MSUM opens NSIC play on Tuesday at Northern State.
