BEMIDJI, Minn. – The Minnesota State University Moorhead softball team was swept in a doubleheader by Bemidji State on Sunday, losing 8-7 in eight innings and 13-0 in five innings in Bemidji, Minn.
MSUM fell to 5-15 overall and 2-2 in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference with the loss while Bemidji State improved to 5-17 overall and 2-0 in the league.
In the opener, senior first baseman
Jordey Smith was 1-for-4 with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. freshman second baseman
Hannah Losee was 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI while junior left fielder
Kiley Washnieski and freshman center fielder
Eliyah McCarthy were each 1-for-3 with an RBI. Freshman shortstop
Annika Norman, freshman third baseman
Avery Steffen and sophomore designated player
Evey Evans had hits.
Steffen and Losee added stolen bases.
Senior
Anna Lang went four innings, giving up eight hits and five earned runs. Evans took the loss, giving up three earned runs in 3.2 innings.
MSUM was down 2-0 early but tied the game in the fourth on Losee's two-run double. In the fifth, the Dragons took the lead, thanks to an RBI single from Washnieski, a three-run double from Smith and an RBI groundout by McCarthy. That five-run inning put the Dragons up 7-2.
Bemidji State cut the lead to 7-5 on a three-run homer in the bottom of the fifth, and tied the game in the bottom of the seventh on a two-run homer. The Beavers scored the winning run in the bottom of the eighth.
Bemidji State scored five runs in the first to take a 5-0 lead and the Dragons never got closer in Game 2 in a 13-0 loss. McCarthy had the Dragons' lone hit.
Steffen took the loss, giving up eight earned runs in 2.1 innings. Sophomore pitcher
Reece Dahl gave up five earned runs in 1.0 innings while freshman
Emma Abbott pitched 0.2 innings.
MSUM hosts St. Cloud State for a doubleheader on Wednesday.
